Trail Calzones

Every now and then, you might get bored with your usual trail dinners.  When it’s time to mix it up, try this recipe for trail calzones.  I made these whenever one of my hiker buddies had a birthday.

What You Need:

•a campfire with lots of coals

•some foil (snag some from a hiker box or get the cheap kind from a grocery store)

•pizza dough (get the 99¢, just add water packages; one package makes 2 calzones)

•sauce (either get powdered spaghetti sauce, or find pizza sauce that comes in the plastic squeeze packages)

•cheese

•whatever toppings you want

•oil or butter

How To Make It:

Have your buddies build the fire while you prepare the dough.

Read the pizza dough package to find out how much water you need to add.  Find somebody with measurements on their cooking pot to get the right amount.  Heat the water so it’s hot, not boiling.  Stir in the dough mix.  If you have oil, pour a little bit over the dough.  Let the dough sit for about 5 minutes.

Grab a piece of foil and smear some butter or oil on it.  Take half of your chunk of dough for one calzone.  Flatten the dough on the foil.  Add the sauce, cheese, and other ingredients.  Fold the calzone in half, and seal the edges.  Flatten it so it can cook quickly.  Wrap the foil around the calzone, and lay it on the coals.

Flip the calzone, every now and then until it’s cooked all the way through.

Once it’s golden brown and the cheese is melty, your trail calzone is ready to eat.
